About Shoepress Development

After the first installation in 1980, shoe press machines became by far the most popular press configuration for board grades. Shoe presses have surpassed conventional roll presses in many aspects of paper machine operation including sheet quality as well as energy consumption. Early shoe presses utilize open loop configuration that is best suited for board grades with machine speed up to 1000meter/minute (3000fpm). More recent development of closed shoe presses made it possible for printing and writing grades to take advantage of this new paper machine technology with the speed in excess of 1500meter/minute (4500fpm).
Closed shoe presses have now become the standard for all paper grades. There are now well over 400 shoe presses around the world already in operation. There are roughly 80 open loop shoe presses. Of the remaining enclosed shoe presses, about 30% of them are printing and writing grades machines. The great majority of these P & W machines came in operation after 1995. Shoe presses for tissue grades are in operation in some countries.
